Day 21: Prague

This post is coming to you from a train, somewhere in between Prague and Vienna. We've been traveling for a little over three hours now, and I think we've nearly crossed back over the Austrian border.

Last night over margaritas and enchiladas Dave and I decided to extend our stay in the Czech Republic for half a day, to fit in a quick trip to the Prague Zoo, as it's ranked as one of the top five zoos in the world. We woke up early, left our bags at the hotel front desk, and made our way lazily through the city streets to the northern crest of the Vltava River, where the Prague zoo is nestled in between grassy hills and luscious vineyards.

Today is not a great day on the photo front, as I kept forgetting to take photos of Dave and I, and instead have nearly 100 photos of various animals and wildlife, which I imagine is not so exciting for anyone who wasn't there. Nonetheless, here are my favourite shots from our time at the zoo:

This mini monkey reminded me of my parents' cat: Emma

A really neat thing about the zoo is that it's built at two different elevations: one on top of a cliffside, and the other at the bottom, closer to sea level.  This means that to get to the second half of the zoo at the lower elevation, you have the option of taking a chairlift down (as opposed to many, many steps). Because of the ongoing theme of gondolas on this trip, a ride down the cliff in this fragile looking chairlift was definitely required:

We rounded out of day at the zoo with a trip to McDonald's for ice cream, as Dave had yet to hit one up in the Czech Republic. This country's McDonald's scored very high, according to Dave and his personal rating system, as we had very fast service, and it was super cheap (think: around $3 Canadian). Aside from our hotel, which we paid for by card, Dave and I only spent the equivalent of about 100 euros in the Czech Republic, over the course of about 48 hours—which is extremely affordable compared to some of our earlier destinations on this trip (looking at you, Switzerland!)

A quick snap of our ice cream before we gobbled it up!

This evening we picked up our luggage from the hotel, made our way to the Prague train station, and boarded a train for Vienna.

Leaving Prague by train, bound for Vienna
I was sad to say good bye to Prague: the city won me over in a heartbeat. But I'm excited to spend tomorrow discovering all that Vienna has to offer!

Until then,
Heather
